Frequently asked questions
How Sunao works, what it can hear, and what it will never ask for.
The basics
Sunao reads the payment notification that your UPI app has already delivered to the phone, and speaks it using the phone's built-in voice. The announcement itself does not depend on a connection. Your UPI app does need internet to receive the payment in the first place, and Sunao needs a connection to sync your dashboard and reports.
Yes. Announcements play with the screen locked and with the phone in your pocket or on a stand. If a Bluetooth speaker is connected, the announcement is routed to it.
No. Sunao never requests the SMS-reading permission. It uses Android notification access, which lets it read the payment notifications that appear in your notification shade - including the alert your bank posts for an SMS. Your payment history stays on the device.
Any UPI app that posts a payment notification, including Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, Amazon Pay, CRED and WhatsApp Pay, plus bank payment alerts.
No. Sunao announces money received only. Debits, payment requests, OTPs and promotional messages are deliberately filtered out, so you only hear collections.
Banks often send an SMS alert minutes after the UPI app's own notification for the same payment. Sunao's duplicate suppression recognises this and announces the payment once.
Every payment is recorded in the dashboard. Open the app to see the live transaction list and your totals for today, this week, this month or any date you choose.
Sunao is ₹99 per month after the free trial. You can cancel at any time from the subscription screen in the app. Access continues until the end of the period you have already paid for, and you are not charged again.
Setup and troubleshooting
Install the app, sign in with your phone number and a one-time password, then grant notification access when prompted. Ask a customer to send a small test payment to confirm you hear the announcement.
In almost every case, notification access was switched off or Android's battery optimisation stopped the app in the background. Re-check notification access in Android settings, and exclude Sunao from battery optimisation.
Yes. Choose from ten Indian languages in settings: English, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Punjabi. The change applies to the next payment you receive.
Connect a Bluetooth speaker and Sunao routes announcements to it, which is useful in a larger shop or at a busy counter.
No. Sunao replaces it. There is no device to buy, no rental, no deposit and nothing extra to charge or carry.
Yes. The reports screen exports a PDF with your total, payment count, average and highest payment, a per-app breakdown and a seven-day earnings chart.
