The Android permission walkthrough

Notification access is the one permission Sunao needs. Here is exactly where to find it.

  1. Step 1: Install the app on your Android phone

Sunao runs on Android. Install it from the Play Store, or from the download link sent to your phone number.

  2. Step 2: Sign in with your phone number

Enter the mobile number you use for your shop. Sunao sends a one-time password by SMS to confirm the number is yours.

    • Use the number you want payment records tied to.
    • The one-time password arrives within a few seconds. Request a new one if it does not.
  3. Step 3: Grant notification access

This is the permission that makes Sunao work. It lets the app see payment notifications as they arrive.

    • Tap the prompt in the app, which opens Android's notification access screen directly.
    • Alternatively: Settings, then Apps, then Special app access, then Notification access.
    • Find Sunao in the list and switch it on. Confirm the Android dialog.
    • Sunao never requests SMS access. If any screen asks you for it, you are not in Sunao.
  4. Step 4: Exclude Sunao from battery optimisation

Android can stop background apps to save power, which would silence announcements. Excluding Sunao keeps it listening all day.

    • Settings, then Apps, then Sunao, then Battery.
    • Choose Unrestricted, or Do not optimise, depending on your phone.
    • On phones from some manufacturers, also lock Sunao in the recent-apps screen.
  5. Step 5: Choose your announcement language

Pick one of ten Indian languages in settings. Amounts are spoken in the language you choose.

  6. Step 6: Send a test payment

Ask a family member to send you ₹1, or pay yourself from a second UPI app. You should hear the amount announced within a moment of the notification arriving.

    • If nothing is announced, check that notification access is still switched on.
    • Check that the phone's media volume is up and silent mode is off.

Sunao never asks for SMS access

Notification access is the only permission required. If any screen claiming to be Sunao asks for permission to read your SMS messages, close it and tell us.

If you do not hear an announcement

  • Check that notification access is still switched on for Sunao.
  • Exclude Sunao from battery optimisation so Android does not stop it in the background.
  • Turn the media volume up and switch silent mode off.
  • If a Bluetooth speaker is paired, confirm it is connected and powered on.
  • Confirm the payment notification actually appeared in your notification shade.

Still silent? Contact support and we will work through it with you.

Stop checking your screen after every payment.

Install Sunao, allow notification access, and hear every rupee that comes in.
